“Gunsmoke” takes place in Dodge City, in the 1890’s American Wild West,
with Matt Dillon as its lawman. Originally written to star the legendary
actor/cowboy John Wayne, the series ended up with James Arness taking
the lead role. Arness, who appeared in all 635 episodes (1955 to 1975),
was also selected over William Conrad who played Dillon in the radio
series of Gunsmoke from 1952 to 1961. The show was originally produced
in half-hour black and white episodes. It moved up into one-hour black
and white episodes and finally moved into one-hour color episodes. The
series featured numerous well-known celebrities that you may recognize
over its 20 years on prime-time TV and is one of the longest running
series in TV history.
